Outreach & Communications Intern

Overview

American Rivers is a national, non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring healthy, natural rivers and the variety of life they sustain for people, fish and wildlife. American Rivers has over 65,000 supporters nationwide, with staff in Washington, DC and the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Midwest, Southeast, California, and Northwest regions. The Outreach & Communications (O&C) Department works with local communities and river activists to raise awareness about the most pressing issues our rivers face. The department develops and implements the organization’s media affairs, publications, advocacy, website and online action center. The O&C intern will work on producing our 22nd annual America’s Most Endangered Rivers report, to be released in April 2007; organizing a river cleanup involving more than 500 groups across the country, and providing general support to the Outreach & Communications team. The internship provides hands-on communications and outreach experience in a fast-paced and fun office environment. The internship is 20-25 hours per week and is unpaid. This position will be located in our Washington, D.C. office. Precise start and end dates are negotiable.


Responsibilities include

Assist in the selection of rivers nominated for the 2007 Most Endangered Rivers report;
Draft communications to members, activists, river groups and concerned citizens;
Assist in writing and editing of print materials and web content;
Provide support for American Rivers’ National River Cleanup Week; and
Perform general administrative duties.


Qualifications

College student or recent graduate preferred (knowledge or demonstrated interest in river or environmental issues, a plus);
Strong communications, organization and research skills;
Ability to work independently on discrete projects; and
Keen attention to detail.
