Sea turtles are getting ready for the event of the year: Tour de Turtles! On August 1st, eight sea turtles began marathon migration with the goal of being the first to complete the 26.2 hundred kilometer journey. Using satellite technology to track their distance, CCC scientists will deploy transmitters on two leatherbacks, two hawksbills, two greens and two loggerheads.
Over the course of 3 months, these brave turtles will face many obstacles, natural and human, as they swim to finish the marathon. Sea turtles enthusiasts from all over the world will be able to follow along and show their support for their favorite swimmer.
By logging on to www.tourdeturtles.org, you too can become part of the action! With tons of activities, games and quizzes, Tour de Turtles offers something for everyone. You can even watch a live release of the turtles leaving their nesting beaches.
Like with human marathons, each turtle will be swimming to support a cause they are passionate about. Through their participation in the marathon, the turtles are hoping to raise awareness to help combat the threats they face on nesting beaches and in the open ocean.
You too can help. By cheering on these courageous swimmers, you can ensure that their voices are heard. Read their biographies, watch their interviews, check out their interactive maps, and sign up to receive weekly updates. We may not be able to predict the course of the race, but one thing is certain: saving sea turtles is a marathon not a sprint!
